| Music Review |
Shah Rukh Khan is the USP of Billu Barber, which has been directed by Priyadarshan, and the superstar has ensured that he has done enough to keep the film in the spotlight. That probably accounts for the fact that he appears in at least three songs of the movie with Bollywood beauties like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. Pritam composes the music for this album, which is hard-core commercial. The composer, who teams up with Gulzar and Sayeed Quadri, comes up with a score which has quite a few numbers which linger on long after one has finished hearing the album. In fact, one can go so far as to say that all the songs in the album have that special Pritam touch.
However, having said that, one has to admit that 'Marjani' the opening number of the album is the crowning glory of this album, which has some seven numbers, all of which have remixed versions as well. The song which has been rendered by Sukhwinder Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan and written by Gulzar, is catchy, exuberant, a fast paced track, which will surely make it to the top of the charts. Add to it the fact that SRK and Kareena do an item number on this song, and one has a fiery mix on hands. The song has been making waves ever since its video was aired a while ago. There are two remix versions of this song, an electro house mix by DJ Sunil & Spinz and a Kilogram's Balkan mix by Kilogram K&G, which is sung by KK and Akriti Kakkar. But the original remains supreme. Sukhwinder is in top form and so is Sunidhi and the duo rock with this number.
The next number on the album, 'Love Mera Hit Hit' sung by Neeraj Sridhar and Tulsi Kumar, has lyrics penned by Ashish Pandit and Mayur Puri. It is a slight letdown from the energetic “Marjani'. But it still has a catchy feel to it which is further enhanced by the house mix by DJ Amyth and the remix by DJ Chelas and DJ NYK. The next number on the album, 'You Get Me Rockin & Reeling' sung by Neeraj Sridhar, has a very deceptive beginning. But as the song progresses and unfolds with the refrain of 'Khudaya Khair, it reveals a very soft romantic core, which is elevating. The number has been penned by Sayeed Quadri and it occurs twice more in the album, in a version which has Dominic joining in with Sridhar and a remix by DJ Suketu. Dominic lends an even mushier feel to the number. This is definitely a number which can give 'Marjani' a run for its money.
The next song on the album, 'Ae Aa O' sung by KK, Rana Mazumdar and Suraj and written by Sridhar, is an oddity in this album. It is a rock number, which somehow does not gel well with the rest of the numbers. But it has been well sung by the KK, Suraj and Rana, who enhance the authentic rock feel created by Pritam. The number has a remixed version as well created by DJ Nikhil & Nawed and lends it self well to this version.
Raahat Fateh Ali Khan comes in to sing the melancholic 'Jaoon Kahaan' which has been penned by Sayeed Quadri. The song has been sung flawlessly by the singer but it does not seem to be the kind of number that is likely to stand out. There is nothing really special about it despite there being nothing wrong with it. It is soothing enough and makes for pleasant listening at the most.
Another number which really stands out for its sheer audacity is the rustic 'Billoo Bhayankar', written by Gulzar and sung by Ajay Jhingran, Raghuveer & Kalpana. This shows an entirely different side of Pritam's musical genius. It is probably a first for him as well. Besides the robust rendering by the vocalists, the highlight of the song is its lyrics. One cannot imagine anyone else but Gulzar, penning them. It takes a different kind of genius to be able to pen a soulful number and then a Billoo Bhayankar. But there is a certain childlike simplicity about Gulzar and he invests the song with just the right brand of unsophisticated glee and fun.
The album ends with 'Khudaya Khair' sung by Soham, Akriti Kakkar & Monali. There is another version to this song, again written by Gulzar, which is sung by Abhijeet, who seems to be back from exile. This number and the 'You Get Me Rockin & Reeling' have the same tune, but different lyrics. The refrain of 'Khudaya Khair', however, has been used to good effect in the previous number. This version is also a soft, romantic number, which is sung very well indeed by all the singers. Abhijeet also gives it his trademark touch. This is another one of those chartbusting numbers.
The musical album of Billu Barber has enough masala in it to rock the charts. At least three of the numbers in the film should make it big time, 'Marjani', 'Khudaya Khair', and 'You get Me Rockin & Reeling.' Full marks to Pritam, who again comes up with a scintillating score, with enough variety to please and satisfy everyone. It's seems to be a good beginning Pritam, who, incidentally, even began last year very well with his scorching tracks for Race. |
